The judging process in FLL consists of three areas:
  • A Research Project
  • Robot Design, and
  • Core values (this represents how teams approach FLL and is the character building aspect of the program)

About Judging
During the tournament, each team will present their research project, robot design, and core values to Judges.  The Project presentation consists of 5 minute presentation by the team, followed by Q&A session.  Robot Design is a 10 minute Q&A related to their process and challenges in building and programming the robot and coming up with a strategy to accomplish the missions. Core values is 10 minute Q&A with judges that is focused on how the team conducted their season, what they learned, and their understanding of FLL Core Values.

The judging in these areas is subjective.  Teams are encouraged to engage the judges and demonstrate their skills and creativity and mostly it is a great opportunity for students to present their accomplishments to adults.

What is expected
  • Teams must participate in all elements of an FLL competition including the Robot Game and all three judged areas in order to be eligible for any FLL Core Award.
  • Judges use the rubrics to help them determine which teams will receive awards.
  • With the exception of the Robot Performance award, FLL awards are determined by a deliberation process, which is formulated around discussions of team performance in each category.
  • If a team does not exhibit Core Values at a tournament, they will be disqualified from winning any awards – including Robot Performance, no matter how well they scored.
  • No team is allowed to win two awards, unless one of the awards is for Robot Performance. Robot Performance is the only category based solely on score.
